The Requests for Comments (RFC) document series is a set of technical and organisational notes concerning the Internet. RFC documents can cover a wide range of topics relating to networking, including protocols, procedures and concepts.
The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG) publish official specification documents for the Internet Protocol (IP) suite as "standards track" RFCs. The RFC publication process is therefore a key milestone in the development of an Internet standard. Before being accepted as standards, RFCs must be published as Internet Drafts.
More information and a history of the development of RFCs is available from the RFC Editor's site via the link alongside.
