SEEREN Connectivity assured by GÉANT
A loss of connectivity for South Eastern Europe has been prevented by GÉANT. The South Eastern European Research and Education Networking (SEREEN) project officially ended on 1 December 2004, and contracts with the telecoms suppliers were only funded until this date.
In a move designed to ensure connectivity for the region, the contracts have been taken over by GÉANT, subject to matching funds being made available from the SEEREN partners. The move highlights the co-operative approach to research networking in Europe, allowing regional research collaboration to continue.
SEEREN interconnects the national research and education networks of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia – Serbia and Montenegro, Greece, Hungary and Romania. The network provides connections to the major GÉANT Points of Presence (PoPs) in the area.
