What Is GÉANT?
GÉANT is the name of both the pan-European research and education network and of the corresponding four-year project that created it.
The GÉANT network is a multi-gigabit data communications network reserved specifically for research and education use. It is the 6th generation of pan-European research network and the 4th generation to be managed by DANTE. GÉANT is unique in Europe for its combination of very high capacity and very wide geographic coverage.
It is one of the most advanced and reliable networks in the world. It exploits developments in telecommunications and makes available previously unimagined transmission capacities. New and advanced applications are being developed to utilise the capabilities of the GÉANT network.
GÉANT is operated by DANTE, a not-for-profit company based in Cambridge, which was established in 1993 by a number of Europe’s NRENs for the purpose of providing pan-European research networking.
