The GÉANT project was a collaboration between 26 National Research and Education Networks representing 30 countries across Europe, the European Commission, and DANTE. Its principal purpose was to develop the GÉANT network - a multi-gigabit pan-European data communications network, reserved specifically for research and education use. The project also covered a number of other activities relating to research networking. These included network testing, development of new technologies and support for some research projects with specific networking requirements.
GÉANT is the name given to both the project and the network that emerged from it. GÉANT2, the successor to GÉANT, officially began on 1 September 2004. The two projects ran side-by-side until June 2005. More information on GÉANT2 can be found on the GÉANT2 website, linked alongside this page. Although service is continuing to be provided over the GEANT network until the construction of GEANT2 is complete, the project has now officially ended, and hence this site is no longer actively maintained. The network connects a total of 34 countries (the 30 represented by the collaborating NRENs plus an additional 4 countries that were not officially partners in GÉANT).
The information in this site is likely to be of interest to GÉANT project partners, European and national policy makers interested in research networking, current and prospective users of the GÉANT network, and anyone who wants to know more about the GÉANT project or the GÉANT network.
